The Pricing Problem Costing You Bookings (Backed by Data)

We’re officially in engagement season, which means your inbox is about to get busy. So before the inquiries start flooding in, I wanted to share something from the 2026 Global Wedding Market Report that might change how you approach those first conversations.

Here’s the data point that stopped me in my tracks: Only 16% of couples said their venue’s pricing and billing was transparent.

That’s the lowest transparency rating of ANY major vendor category. And, listen,I get it—pricing is complicated at venues. You’ve got so many variables that other vendors simply don’t have.

But here’s what I need you to understand: when couples feel unclear about your pricing, it creates a domino effect that’s quietly undermining everything else you’re doing right.

Why this matters for your business

I know you’re not intentionally hiding information. Most venues I work with are just trying to avoid scaring couples off with prices before they fall in love with the space.

But here’s what the data shows is actually happening:

1. Couples simply don’t know what venues cost.
59% of couples spent MORE on their venue than expected. This is because they have no idea how much a venue costs before they start planning their wedding. They’ve never done this before! And you get the raw end of that naïveté. It’s harsh, but true.

We have to realize that a lot of what you’re doing to start is educating them on industry standards.

2. Couples come in with their dukes up.
60% of couples negotiated with their venue on fees and inclusions—the highest negotiation rate of any vendor type.

When pricing isn’t clear from the start, couples come into every conversation with their guard up, assuming you’re hiding something. You end up spending your energy defending your prices instead of building excitement about their wedding.

4. Even great service doesn’t overcome pricing confusion
Only 24% of couples said their venue met or exceeded expectations.

OUCH! That one hurts. And a few things are going on within that data point, to be sure.

But what I know is that you could be delivering amazing service, going above and beyond on the wedding day, and still—if couples felt blindsided by costs along the way, that’s what they remember.

Here’s the pattern I see: Unclear pricing → eroded trust → defensive couples → exhausting sales process → disappointing reviews → fewer referrals.

And the heartbreaking part? You’re working so hard to create beautiful weddings, but the pricing confusion is undermining all of it.

What you can do about it

The good news? This is one of the most fixable problems in venue marketing. You don’t need to change your pricing—you just need to change how you communicate it. Here’s where to start:

1. Watch Marketing the Murder Barn Episode 5
Mary Claire and I walk you through exactly how to present pricing on your website and in your materials—with real examples of packages that build trust while still driving tour bookings. If you’re feeling stuck on this, this episode will help.

2. Do a pricing audit this week
Pull up your website and look at how you handle pricing and package info there. Then read through your inquiry response emails as if you’re a couple who just got engaged.

Ask yourself honestly: Would I know what I’m actually going to spend? Would I understand what’s included and what costs extra? If you’re not sure, your couples aren’t either.

3. Build your transparent pricing document
Create a simple one-page PDF that shows your venue fee, any required minimums, common add-ons, and all fees/taxes broken out clearly. And here’s the key: share it BEFORE the site tour.

I know that feels scary. But when you proactively address costs (including what’s NOT included), you transform the conversation from “how much?” to “is this the right fit for us?”

Gen Z hates being surprised. The venues I see succeeding right now aren’t the ones with the lowest prices—they’re the ones where couples never feel that way. When you lead with transparency, you’re not just avoiding negative reviews. You’re positioning yourself as the confident, trustworthy guide couples are looking for.

You’ve got this. And we’ve got your back.
